Alphonse, a comic book series by Mattew Lickona '95

Some time ago, I came across a comic strip in the National Catholic Register entitled Umbert the Unborn. Cartoonist Gary Cangemi had created Umbert to manifest the personhood of the fetus, and to that end, he had endowed the little guy with reason, will, and a pretty thorough understanding of the outside world. In particular, Umbert knew about abortion.
Umbert was (and remains, all these years later) a cheerful fellow. But he got me to thinking: what if it were true? What if you were a fetus, suspended upside down in the dark, barely able to move, completely dependent on your mother for sustenance and care, and were also conscious of the fact that, at any moment, you could be killed? That you were completely vulnerable and utterly defenseless, and that there was nothing - not even the law - standing between you and violent death? Month after month in the dark, wondering when the axe might fall. What would that experience be like? What would it do to a person? Alphonse was born out of that question.
But whatever its origins, Alphonse is not a polemic. It is not a treatise. It is the story of eight suffering souls whose lives intersect because of an attempted abortion. Alphonse - who, like Umbert, is no ordinary fetus - is among those eight. He is my version of Flannery O'Connor's Misfit - the grotesque horror who nonetheless speaks with a prophet's voice.

Update on our son Stevie

For those of you who may remember I posted before about our son Stevie who was diagnosed with congenital cholesteatoma (growth of skin) in his right ear, we thought we'd update you on how he is doing!Well, God has blessed us and answered our prayers.Stevie had his second surgery a little over a week ago on June 16th. He was found to be without any new growth of cholesteatoma( which is amazing due to the great chance of reaccurance with having had such a large cholesteatoma)and so the surgeon was able to do the reconstruction needed, giving him two titanium hearing bones for the pieces that were missing. This is wonderful news because it means that Stevie will not need any more surgeries now since the cholesteatoma was gone. They will keep an eye on him though and will see how things look with a CT scan in 6 months. We do not know how well he is hearing yet as he is still healing and there is packing in the ear, but after a few weeks he should be hearing better. We'll find out just how much better after he gets some hearing tests then. At any rate, he should be able to hear better than he was before! He is recovering well, and has to stay calm and not as active for about a month- which is easier said than done with a hyper 5 yr old!:) Anyway, we are very happy and thank you to all that have prayed for him.

My sister and a few other Catholic girls are looking for one more roommate. They are planning to rent a great house in a nice neighborhood of Falls Church, Virginia, and the lease starts on June 1 so they need someone ASAP. Rent would be $575 for a private bedroom, sharing a bathroom with one other girl. Anyone who is interested can contact Mary McPherson at mcpherson.me@gmail.com or at (704) 701-1700.
Thanks!

Pro-life Training Coming to Ventura

Justice For All (http://jfaweb.org) will be coming to Ventura to help train Pro-lifers to effectively dialogue with Pro-choicers and those who are on the fence regarding this issue.
The event will be held on Thursday, May 14th from 7PM - 9PM at San Buenaventura Mission in O'Brien Hall. For those of you who don't know the address it is 211 East Main St Ventura CA.
I've been part of this training in Colorado and when they were at UCSB last year about this time and highly reccomend it. At the UCSB event last year there were a few TAC students as well. The training is a great opportunity to learn how to discuss the essential question "what is the unborn?" with those who do not share our convictions.
I recommend viewing "virtual exhibit" on the website before deciding to bring children. JFA uses graphic images to bring about dialogue and they may not be appropriate for children.
For more information or to register contact Maureen at maureen@jfaweb.org.
Live outside the Ventura area? There will also be training in Pasadena and San Diego the following weekend. Check out http://www.jfaweb.org for more information.

Sr. Miriam Thérèse of the Holy Face (Kelly Waldman, class of 2007) will be making her First Vows (Rite of Temporary Profession) on Ascension Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Carmel of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in Valparaiso, NE. Seven members of her family will be traveling to witness this momentous occasion. Please keep her in your prayers as she progresses in her vocation. She and all of the Sisters pray for everyone at T.A.C. (We know this for a fact, because she mentions it in almost every letter!)
